JIM FRINK - drummer, educator

Bio

Jim Frink is a versatile drummer based near Sacramento, CA with a strong background in jazz.

Having been involved with music at an early age, Jim first began playing drums professionally in high school. Upon graduation, he received the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award and toured Japan with the Monterey Jazz Festival's Next Generation Jazz Orchestra. He studied music at UC Santa Cruz and has performed internationally in five countries. He is also a member of the collective jazz trio Triism (with Levi Saelua and Alex Reiff), which was awarded the Grand Prize in the 2016 Bucharest International Jazz Competition.

Jim has performed in a variety of styles - his experience and interests include jazz, rock, funk, country, pop, Balkan folk, Brazilian, and experimental music. The Jim Frink Trio performs jazz at a twice-monthly residency at the Root of Happiness Kava Bar in Davis. He also performs regularly with Boca Do Rio (Brazilian), Ryan Thompson and the Delicate Hounds (alt-country), Shiva X (free improvised music with Tony Passarell and Robert Kuhlman) and the Davis Klezmer Orchestra. His experimental duo project with Jacam Manricks, Music Shop, incorporates live loops and has released a self-titled album.

Through his involvement in education, Jim enjoys passing on his knowledge and experience on to next generation of drummers. He was a guest lecturer at California State University, Sacramento for the Jazz Pedagogy class and has over 15 years of experience teaching music in California, New Zealand, and Australia. He currently offers private lessons to drum students at his studio in Davis.
